- I actually have two SCSI adaptors for my A1200 - the Squirrel and the Apollo
- 1230 SCSI. I know it seems like a bit of an overkill but I got the Squirrel
- SCSI way before I got the accelerator. It turns out that I've actually
- benefitted because both SCSI adaptors have their advantages and
- disadvantages.
-
- Squirrel SCSI (PCMCIA)
- ----------------------
- Convenient plug and play, excellent support software, but slow boot-up
- time for A1200, 16bit data txfer and no autoboot from SCSI device, can't
- use other PCMCIA devices (eg Aura sound card, Video Digitizers, Ethernet
- cards, Serial ports etc)
-
- Apollo (or Blizzard ) SCSI
- -------------------------
- Autoboot SCSI devices, quick A1200 boot-up, >possible< 32bit data txfer?,
- DMA data txfer? (= less CPU loading), but (dis)mounting not so
- straightforward.
-
-
- If I'm doing direct-2-disk recording from Aura or coding (involving a lot of
- machine crashes and resets :-)) then the Apollo SCSI is essential. If I
- fancy looking at a CD quickly or doing CD32 emulation then the Squirrel
- SCSI is pressed into action. So it very much comes down what you intend to
- do with the new SCSI peripherals added to your setup.
